As is symbolically reflected in the picture, the earth, with a chimney in his mouth, is suffering from lung cancer. It is easy to read the implication behind the picture because it is a fairly prevalent issue, i.e., air pollution. As far as I am concerned, it is a matter which deserves grave attention.
The logic behind the picture can be interpreted in many aspects, and the following ones are worth discussion. First and foremost, the modern civilization has empowered us to change our relationship with the material world on an unprecedented scale. It can be beneficial if handled appropriately, but the sword of Damocles otherwise. In this sense, air pollution is the side effect of this great era. Moreover, the lack of effective supervision partly contributed to the deterioration of the problem because few would defy the law under the bare daylight if they should know their behavior

If the measures should be taken, we would be bound for a promising future.

So what are the reasons of the phenomenon reflected by the figure? First of all, the most important factor that we have to take into account is that with people’s living standard improving, they can afford to consume more products, which inevitably leads to more resource waste. Besides, importance hasn’t been attached to the improvement of the environmental protection awareness of the public, especially those who hold the opinion that it doesn’t matter if they pursue greater profits at the expense of the environment. Last but not least, the lack of severe punishments can, directly or indirectly, lead to environmental pollution. Some people rather miss the point, putting all their energy and passion into treating the environment after polluting it rather than preventing pollution at the first place.
From what has been mentioned above, it is high time that some effective initiatives were taken to raise the environmental protection awareness of the public in order to control environmental pollution from the source and ensure the sustainable development of the earth.
